Greek Theatre

The theatre was originally festival for the gods. The god Dionysus had his festival where men would perform songs to welcome the god. However plays were only performed during that festival. Athens was the main center for theatrical traditions.
In early theatre only three actors allowed to perform in a play. Soon a chorus was added and they became more evolved into an active part in the theatre.
The type of plays performed were tragedy, comedy, and satyr.
The first greek actor was Thespis and the originator of Tragedy. The three main tragedy playwrights are Sophocles, Euripides and Aeschylus.
Comedy was the most important part of greek theatre. It was derived from imitation and there is no exact origin. Aistophanes wrote most of the comedy plays. Out of these 11 plays survived -
Lysistrata
The theatre was an large open air structure that was constructed on the slope of hills. It had three main elements the orchestra, the skene ,and the audience.
