The history of the Games

The Olympics began in the year 776 BC. It happened every four years and were held in honor of the god Zeus, the king of the gods. It was held at Olympia , a valley which was near the city of Elis. The sacred truth was when announced a month before the Olympics games because the city states were often at war with each other so this made it safe for the people to travel to the Olympics.
The EVents

Over the four days of the games the events are boxing, wrestling, long jump, throwing javelin and discus and chariot racing. In the pentathlon the five events held there are: wrestling, long jump, throwing javelin and discus and running. The hardest event would be where men would run wearing full armor and carrying a shield. The other competitors would not be wearing any clothing at all.
the winners

The winners would be given a wreath of leaves and were given a hero's welcome home. The winners would marry rich women ,enjoy free meals ,invitations to parties and be given good seats in the theatre.
the Spectators

About 50,000 people could sit in the stadium. Away from the stadium people would set up tents but the most important people and athletes were housed in hotel rooms. At the end of the games there would be a big feast and many merchants would sell goods and politicians would come and talk to the crowds. Only men , boys and unmarried girls were allowed to watch the games. If any married women were caught at the games were punished. The women had their own games every four years.
